Diary of a Dress: Civil War Ball Gown! {one}

I'm going to a Civil War ball... my first historical one, in fact! I'm really really REALLY really really excited about it. Like, jumping around and stuff and feeling butterflies in my stomach when I think about it.

OF COURSE I'm making a dress. I'd be either sick or dead if I wasn't able to or didn't want to! I got the skirt pretty much all done last weekend. Here's some shots on my dress form!

Double layered skirt! I draped the whole thing on my dressform; the only thing that's from a pattern is the waist band. I'll be decorating with ribbons and flowers!

(I'll let you in on a little secret: the cream skirt is from a wedding dress that we tore apart months ago!)

Here are the pleats in the back... sigh. I love those pleats. They make me something proud.

And here's the mock up of the bodice, which fits like a DREAM. Sigh. I can't wait for all this to come together in the final product!

Edelweiss Patterns: Liesl's Party Dress!

Katrina of Edelweiss Patterns released a lovely pattern based on Lisel's dress when the von Trapps were singing goodnight to their father in The Sound of Music! It's really lovely... I'm super tempted to get it. I think it'd make a PERFECT dance dress for the summer!

Next dress Katrina's working on from The Sound of Music? Lisel's Edelweiss Dress! Yay!

Old Republic Jedi Robes: Almost Complete!

Can I just say how much I love Star Wars? I've been a fan even before the prequels, before The Clone Wars cartoons, before it was hyper-uber-commerziallized. Back in the day when I used to be a gmrgrrl (gamer girl for you n00bs), Star Wars games were all I played.

Jedi Academy, Battlefront, Jedi Outcast, Rogue Squadron, Rebel Assault 2, Dark Forces...

But the best of all?

Knights of the Old Republic.

Period. It's like, still the best game. The second one is okay too, but I think the first one is hard to beat in terms of story, pacing, characters- ahh. It's like bliss whenever I turn it on nowadays. (The best part about the game was Carth Onasi... one of my longest crushes. I explain on my other blog, in case you're interested.)

Anyway, the game is set 4,000 years BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin... or Episode IV for you n00bs), so the Jedi robes are considerably different than they are in the initial films. I have spoken about them before in previous posts (here and here, most notably), but once you see the pictures below you'll see what I'm talking about.

So without further adieu- me IN my almost completed robes!

Let me just say that I felt like a BOSS wearing them.

What's missing? Well, I plan on making some actual pants for starters. Because as we all know, leggings aren't pants. (At least I hope you knew that...) Then, I hope to obtain an awesome belt (thinking about this one) and, eventually, to craft an outer robe. A big billowing one.

Until my costume is complete....

May the force be with you all!

Like these robes? Want your own? Prefer a different era or style? Just drop me a line... I love working with custom orders!
